The Sub-Saharan Network Challenge

Retail businesses in East Africa face recurring fiber cutouts and intermittent grid outages. When checkout counters depend on cloud APIs for barcode lookups, queues quickly back up.

Offline-First Protocol

An offline-first point-of-sale design rests on three ideas:

  1. Local SQLite WAL Cache: Every terminal hosts a read-optimized catalog for fast local lookups.
  2. Cryptographic Transaction Queues: Offline sales receive signed digital receipt tokens.
  3. Event-Driven Asynchronous Reconciliation: When connectivity returns, batched delta sync reconciles inventory across the central ERP.
