Customers often look a business up online before they call, visit or send a quotation request. A clear website answers their first questions (what you do, where you are, how to reach you) and works for you even when the office is closed. This guide helps organisations across Ethiopia, from Addis Ababa to Hawassa, plan a website that is useful from the first day.
Start with what the website must do
Before choosing a design, write down the one or two actions you want visitors to take. For most organisations it is one of these:
- Call or message you (phone, Telegram or WhatsApp)
- Request a quotation for a service or product
- Book a room, a table, an appointment or a demo
- Find your location and opening hours
- Download a price list, brochure or registration form
Every page should make that action easy. A website that tries to do everything usually does nothing well.
The pages most organisations need
- Home: who you are, what you offer and the main button (call, quote, book).
- About: your story, your team and why clients can trust you.
- Services or products: one clear section per service, with what is included.
- Portfolio or gallery: real work, real photos, real client results.
- Contact: phone, e-mail, address, a map and a short form.
- Privacy policy and terms: needed as soon as the site collects names, phone numbers or e-mails.
A blog or news page is optional, but it helps Google understand your expertise and gives people a reason to come back.
Features that matter for customers in Ethiopia
- Mobile first and light pages. Most visitors use a phone, often on a mobile connection. Compressed images and simple pages load faster and cost visitors less data.
- Click-to-call and chat links. A phone number that opens the dialler, and Telegram or WhatsApp links, turn visitors into conversations.
- Your location on Google. A map, your address written the same way everywhere, and a Google Business Profile help people near you find you, while good page titles help people in other cities find you too.
- Local payment options when you sell online. Ethiopian customers use bank transfers and mobile money such as telebirr, which ethio telecom launched in May 2021.
- The right languages. If many of your customers prefer Amharic, Afaan Oromo or another language, plan translated pages from the start.
- A content management system (CMS). Your team should be able to update prices, photos, news and job posts without calling a developer.
Domain name and hosting
Choose a short domain that matches your name. You can use a .com address or an Ethiopian address such as .com.et, which ethio telecom offers. Whichever you choose, make sure the domain is registered in your organisation's name and that you have the login. Ask where the site will be hosted, who makes backups and how often.
What to prepare before the project starts
- Your logo (the original file if you have it) and brand colours
- Real photos of your team, office, products or projects
- A short description of each service and who it is for
- Contact details, opening hours and the exact location pin
- Two or three websites you like, and why you like them
Preparing these early is the easiest way to finish a website on time.
How to compare website packages
When you compare offers, check the same points for each one:
- Number of pages and whether you can add more later
- Whether a CMS and training are included
- Whether domain, hosting and SSL (the padlock) are included, and for how long
- Basic SEO setup: page titles, descriptions, sitemap and Google Search Console
- Support after launch: who fixes problems and how quickly
- Who owns the website, the domain and the content at the end
